The effects of theraplay on social behavior of young children with autism

Abstract
The theraplay is one of the methods which increases the attachment between mother-child and the social competence for relationship through the physical touch with play. So this study was attempted to investigate the effects on social behaviors of young children with autism. The subjects of this study was three autistic kindergarteners, who had no experience of theraplay. For the diagnosis, DSM-IV and Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) were used. The study was carried out by multiple baseline design. Every session was recorded, and the frequence of social behaviors related to social responsibilities, self-assertion, and prosocial physical posture were analyzed, using Social Functioning Rating Scale(SFRS). The results were as followed. The children¡¯s social resposibilities were improved. The children became to be able to reply¡°yes¡±when calling their name, which were rarely observed at the beginning of the intervention. Secondly, the children¡¯s self-assertion were increased. For example, the frequency of physical contact such as touching their face by hands or reaching out their hand with saying¡°please give me¡± were increased. Thirdly, the children¡¯s prosocial physical postures were improved. When they demanded something or contacted with someone¡¯s bodies, their eye contact was increased. And when someone called them, the frequency of turning their head was increased.
